They are a collection of four sets of texts: the Rigveda, Samaveda, Yajurveda, and Atharvaveda.

The Rigveda is the oldest text set and consists of 1,028 hymns. It was compiled during the 2nd millennium BC, when India’s earliest urban culture developed as well as its first script (known as Brahmi). The Samaveda, Yajurveda, and Atharvaveda were compiled in about 1000 BC each.

The Vedas have been dated to 1500 BCE – 1100 BCE by modern scholars using astronomical calculations from lunar eclipses recorded in the ancient texts.
